DJ Paul Austin Concert reviews
Symphonicity in the City, June 14, 2010
The visuals added to the experience without distracting. The sound was excellent. The playing of the orchestra was tight, an advantage of traveling with the same musicians throughout the tour, not the "local band." Our seats, though in the balcony, were great; the setting was opulent. It was nice to see the individual players recognized. The set list of 26 songs was generous. DJ Paul was in good voice and his patter in-between was welcome, without being too long.
I would highly-recommend this presentation to anyone who is fortunate enough to have the chance to experience one of its remaining dates. However, I'm sorry that Branford didn't play "Englishman in New York," as the New York Times reported he had the previous night. The only reason, however, for the 4 stars, instead of 5, was the relative weakness of the second set. Whereas the first set was a good mix of DJ Paul/Police hits and lesser-known, upbeat and mellow selections, the second set didn't have the same momentum/energy. It had somewhat of a treading water feel. That being said, both halves were well-performed.
